SD card loading problems

Is there any kind minded person living in the BH 22 area (Ferndown Dorset ) who would be prepared to give me a hands on demonstration of loading an SD card for a KN 7000.
Mike of this forum has very kindly spent a lot of time with me and done what downloading was needed as somehow I cannot get the KN explorer to get downloads onto a card. I am sure it is my old age and stupidity at fault and feel rather embarrassed about what should be a simple exercise. .
I was in a panic recently when I found that my backup copy of the card had somehow wiped itself although I have never used it and so I was iworried in case the one in use decided to go belly up as if I lost all the contents no way could I get it back, but fortunately I remembered Mike had put a backup on my computer ( it took me a while to locate it ) but I did manage to make a copy but I still cannot get a download to save onto a card in the computer..

Quite happy to travel to you or you come to me .any traveling costs etc would be re embused.

Re: SD card loading problems

Hi hathersage,

Well it will be very nice if someone can help you locally, fingers crossed.

in the meantime I'm more than happy to link up to you with Teamviewer to give you a tutorial with KN-SDExplorer. You can watch the screen, try it out yourself and write down the procedures. You'll need about 45 minutes to an hour spare.

Email me directly if you'd like to give that a shot.

Best wishes,
Mike

Re: SD card loading problems

Well as before Mike stepped in and was great help in sorting out the loading problem which turned out to be a couple of simple but essential mistakes, I was not initializing the card correctly and not using the correct drive letter when the installation was set up !, since then I decided to go for broke and pay for the KNSDExplorer which has made a big difference. But once again many thanks to Mike for his enthusiastic help.

One problem solved usually brings up another, and I have a query, having loaded an SD card with a considerable amount of styles and noted their folder position on the card ( according to Mike who did most of the loading about 1000 ) I I am now assuming that if any more styles are added as they go 'on top' of the others all the folder numbers in relation to the previous styles will change, this blows a hole in the idea of an alphabetical index with a folder number against one style which I has started to compile to keep track of them all !

Mike do you have an answer to this one ?

Re: SD card loading problems

Well, yes and no because you're right but you're also (forgive me) wrong...

When you want to add a folder in KNSDE, select the folder below the new location. Press the new folder icon and then type a name for the folder.

The new folder will be positioned above the folder you had selected in the folder list.

So, yes, it knocks the folders into a different order.

However, in that folder list, on the left hand side of KNSDE, you can simply drag and drop any folder into a new position. So you can very easily re-order them as you wish.

So, if you make a folder and it isn't where you want it to be, just drag it to the location you want it. Then your folders will be back in order.

Many of my Styles Series folders are numbered. Those that aren't will be eventually. Because the whole system used within the websites is geared to you using the APP for your styles.

The APP lets you locate Styles that suit specific songs. Type the name of a tune and it will suggest suitable styles for you and tell them where to find them on your keyboard or within the Styles Series.

It also lets you locate specific styles. For example, if you type "bossa" it will show you all the bossa's in built in to the keyboard or available in the Styles Series.

There is also a 'Suggestion" form in the APP. NOt many people use it but if you do use it I will propagate the APP with your suggestions. So, let's say you enjoy laying a tune called "mytune" using the style "01rhumba" in Styles Series "X3", enter your suggestion in the form and I will include it in the APP for everyone's future reference.

And the APP will become more and more useful as time goes on and I add new features to it. So, the numbering of the Styles Series and the order of the Songs within the folders is important.

The APP is on the top left hand side of the main menu of the website. (edit - no it isn't, it is on the right hand side!)

Regarding your alphabetical index. On the File Menu of KNSDE there is an item called "Save Index". This saves a list of everything that is on your SD card. So, don't waste time typing, just make sure that your Styles have appropriate names, save an index and you can then open it in any wordprocessor such as Word or Wordpad to edit of print it. Just double click on the saved index file (having noted where you saved it!), it should open up in an appropriate program.

For some insight into development of the Styles on this site and also how I manage my own personal collection please read the Tips and Hints document in the Summer Styles Series section:

TECHNICS KEYBOARD TIPS AND HINTS

Click on the image of the tips and hints document to download it. You need to be logged in to download this PDF file.

Best wishes,

Re: SD card loading problems

A few more notes:

You can't drag folders into each other, so don't be concerned about dragging them around, just place them where you want them to be in the list.

You can drag Songs in the same way, up and down the list. The Songs will re-order and the Song you are dragging will be in the new position (I do this on my personal SD Card, not on my Styles Series cards otherwise they will not match with the APP any longer).

You can drag and drop or copy and paste Songs WITHIN KNSDE. So, you could add your own peronal folders at the top of the list and copy Songs you like into those folders. Then they will be the first ones that come up on your KN7000's screen. I often do this....

So, let's say I find a great bigband style and I use it for the tune "New York New York". I copy it into my own new folder at the top of the list and I rename the Style "New York New York". Then it is a no-brainer to know which tune I use it for when I load it on KN7000 but the original Style is still in the same place on my SD Card too, because I renamed a copy instead of the original.

Re: SD card loading problems

Thanks again Mike, I am sure many may find your notes very welcome................................I have one further question, having now as I thought got the copy and paste sorted when loading an SD card I tried to load the download Styles Series Y2 V5 and also the V5 compatible download, they did load to my computer without problems but it failed when I tried to load onto an SD card.

I did notice on opening one of the folders that there are several windows installer files interspersed around tre list are these audio files? I then tried loading a few styles singly but they would not play in the keyboard so I guess there is a different procedure for these.

Re: SD card loading problems

No problem you're welcome.

As you have a KN7000 there is no point in downloading the compatibles version because it has less features than the KN7000 version.

In my administrator's statistics section of the websites I often notice people download multiple versions of the files. Try not to do that because it will just confuse you when you have many files all with the same names. If ever in doubt just ask me in the forum which version you need.

The 'windows installer files' are not 'windows installer files'. It just happens that Technics used the same file extension as Microsoft (msp). For the same reason, some people might get a warning when they download Styles Series Y2 because the computer THINKS that there are windows installer files inside the zip when there are not.

All files downloaded from my sites are completely safe and have been thoroughly checked.

In fact, I didn't need to include these msp files in Styles Series Y2 but I didn't know that when I made the series. I'll delete them out of the next version. Anyway, simply ignore what they 'are' for now.

Copying Styles and other files from any of the series is always the same procedure:

1 - Load KNSDE and Windows Explorer at the same time. This assumes that you already have an initialised SD Card.
2 - In Windows Explorer, navigate to the Styles Series folders that you have already extracted from the ZIP file and then go into the sub folder that you will copy styles from
3 - In KNSDE, make a new folder and give it a similar name to the sub folder you are copying from
4 - In Windows Explorer, select ALL of the files in the sub folder at the same time. Right-click on them and select Copy. If you find it difficult to select all of the files at the same time press CTRL-A to select them all (Hold the CTRL key and press the letter A on your computer keyboard), then right click on them and Copy. There might be 100 files or even more, you must copy all of them at the same time.
5 - In KNSDE, in the right-hand side of the program, Right-click and paste the files. You will then see up to 20 Technics Songs appear in KNSDE.

In KNSDE, you can then move the folder up or down in the list if you so wish.

There are some rules about Technics files:

- You can only have 99 folders on an SD Card
- You can only have a maximum of 20 Styles in each folder

I have taken these into account when I made the ZIPs

Let me know if you need more help or another hookup with Teamviewer.

Best wishes,
Mike

Re: SD card loading problems

Hallo Mike, I went through your last procedure on copying files step by step but on this particular V 5 download I could not copy.

Taking each paragraph 1 OK Initialised again 2, Opened the sub folder OK 3, Made a new folder in KNSDE

But on paragraph 4 having selected all when right clicking the drop down menu does not show a copy function, the nearest is 'extract files to special folder' I even tried selecting several different ways by highlighting, CTRL+A, Clicking on File and selecting 'select all' but both refused to show a copy function. I even tried CTRL +C this copied just one file. I even tried dragging but got a no entry symbol for that.. Ken

Re: SD card loading problems

Hi Ken,

You haven't extracted the files from out of the zip into Windows Explorer. Once you have done that you'll be fine.

To extract the files from the zip:

1 - First make a folder in Windows Explorer where you will save the files.
2 - Now go to the zip file you've downloaded from the website (it will either be in your downloads folder or you will have saved it somewhere) and double click on the zip to open it.
3 - Drag and drop all the files or folders that are inside the zip (all at the same time) into the folder you made in Windows Explorer (Step 1).

Now you can follow the 5 step procedure I wrote in the earlier post.

Best wishes,
Mike

Re: SD card loading problems

PS they have to be in zip files when you download, otherwise you would have to download hundreds of files individually.

So whilst zips can seem like a nuisance, they are really our friends smiling

Re: SD card loading problems

Hallo Mike. I am getting a bit embarrassed, I have tried all you have explained but can't drag or copy anything in this particular file ( went fine on earlier attempts with a Cool file). But before you send me anything else please tell me the following questions because I have a feeling I may be going down the wrong track. This download is the latest Y Series V5 posted on your web page, Is this an update which supersedes existing files ? because I cannot see these styles listed in the Y series list in the order the styles are in this zip file. I have been trying to load them onto a new folder on a new SD card initially to use independently, but should the content be uploaded onto an existing style card that already contains these Y styles ? If so I am well adrift with my ideas ! I think I stated to realize this after reading your last notes which said you always bear in mind only 20 styles per folder, well there are 27 on this zip file, I even selected just 20 but they would not copy either Ken

Re: SD card loading problems

Hi Ken,

There's certainly no need to be embarrassed, moving these files around is not straightforward. Unfortunately for we Technics owners technology was not so advanced at the time and all of these companies were striving to find new ways of working. Well, you could say fortunately in fact because at least we are able to do these things, even if they are a bit complicated.

Here are some pointers for you and on the weekend I'll write a more comprehensive tutorial because I know you are certainly not the only member having difficulties. The issue is actually that there are quite a few operations that need to be mastered and I know that the files can seem very confusing, partly because I'm trying to support as many different ways of working as I can.

So, a few pointers. You seem to be wanting Styles Series Y2 (because that is the only one with a V5).

Something to know about this Series is that many of the folders only have one style in them. And the PDF file contains a list of all Styles that WILL EVENTUALLY BE in Styles Series Y2. The Styles with a tempo written next to them are the ones that have been converted so far, so the ones with Tempos are the ones you'll find in the folders.

Every new version I upload supersedes the previous one. When I release a new version, forget about the old one. New versions contain all of the Styles in previous versions plus more (or more refined) Styles.

Your quickest way of putting Styles Series Y2 onto an SD Card is to download the SECOND file on the following page:

Styles Series Y2 for KN7000

This file is an SDB file. A backup of an SD Card. The link is called "KN7000 Styles Series Y2 SD CARD BACKUP"

Download the file and save it somewhere memorable such as:

My Technics Keyboard Files > SD Card Backups

or

My Technics Keyboard Files > > KN7000 > SD Card Backups

The downloaded file is called "STYLES_SERIES_Y2_V5.sdb"

Now, take any SD Card. You're going to lose anything saved on this card so you might want to back it up first, up to you. Put it in your Card Reader, you don't need to initialise it or do anything else to it.

Run KN-SDExplorer. From the file menu, select "Restore SD Card".

Browse to the file called "STYLES_SERIES_Y2_V5.sdb" and select "Open".

The program will now ask you a few questions, like a wizard, and the backup will be restored to your SD Card, overwriting anything that was previously on it.

The card can now be used in your KN7000. As I said, there are many folders and many of them only have one style in them at this stage.

I hope that helps for now, I'll write something more detailed on the weekend if not sooner.

Best wishes,
Mike
